In partnership with Sonder Bikes

The realisation that the people around us lead lives that are just as complicated and meaningful as our own.

English definition of sonder from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig

Alpkit has always been a favoured brand of mine since I started pushing myself in the outdoors. Their PipeDream 400 keeps me warm when I’m camping, my bivvy bag keeps me dry during the same occasions and the Kraku ignites alongside my heart when I’m on a hillside in need of a cuppa.

I’ve worked with them as a freelancer (I’m even the star of a film!) and I’ve attended their events as a punter as the years have ticked slowly by. Their flagship store is a short bike ride away from me and I often swing by on my way through to see friends or have a mooch.

During my latest appointment as Social Media Manager at the brand, I saw how much love there is for the Sonder Bikes brand. There’s a Facebook group of owners who share photos of their latest adventures or seek advice for their next component upgrade, riders send DMs from muddy bridleways and the albums of tagged photos show just how capable the bikes are of making the outdoors that little bit more fun.

Local connections

It gives me the warm and fuzzies to have a personal connection with a brand: I know that Neil is passionate about building exciting bikes even if he believes MTB is superior to road riding (it’s a shame he’s wrong, but what can you do? 😜), I know the CEO Dave can’t wait to hear about how far I can push the bike both in terms of distance and elevation, I know Alice will accompany me on some of my training rides and we’ll buy each other a slice of cake on the way around. Most of all, it’s a local brand with a presence in and love of the same place as me: the Peak District National Park.

I’m therefore delighted to share the news that I’ll be supported by Sonder Bikes for my upcoming adventures!

Special. e.g. “Ich habe ein sonderes Rad” // “I have a special bike”

German definition of sonder

“Go on then, what bike have you got?” I hear one or two of you asking. Well, given I ride a heck of a lot of long-distance stuff, I’ve opted for a Sonder Colibri Ti and oh, my word. it. is. beautiful. I’ll walk you through it!

Sia the Sonder

She’s the titanium goddess of the roads, a bike to be reckoned with and an object of desire. And she’s mine! She’s understated with her looks: that brushed finish and plain black fork might not look as fancy as other wild and wonderful paint jobs but I like her all the more for it. If my memory serves me correct, the frame is actually a prototype especially for Di2 setups to include internal cabling options. I’ll be feeding back on a few things as and when.

I chose Rich and Shona at Keep Pedalling to build me my third set of wheels in about as many years and they came up trumps! I’m so happy with them and popping on the WTB Exposure tyres was as sweaty a job as I was anticipating. My concentration levels even afforded me the time to align the logos with the valve. 😏

I recently had a bike fit with Richard at Fit4Physio in Sheffield and he advised an inline seatpost and narrower bars. I’m not too fussed about finishing kits–should I be?–so what I’ve got on there now will more than suffice.

One of the big changes for me with this bike is the introduction to MTB pedal world. I’ve joined the revolution, friends! Never again will I conduct a supermarket sweep with the background risk of slipping on my arse next to the bakery. I might even try a graceful dismount before plonking Sia against a wall one day…who knows? Tickets to the subsequent ungraceful crash available soon.
